Cruise Offers is a well established travel company that offers customers the latest specials and lowest prices on cruises from the world’s leading cruise lines.
The SEO Challenge
Cruise Offers was a new online cruise business competing against well established brands such as PO Cruises and Flight Center. The challenge was, how could we rank their site against the industry leaders?
We decided to target lower competition and long tail keywords first to build up authority. After achieving a #1 ranking for “cruise offers” we set our sights upon higher traffic keywords using market samurai. The next two we targeted were “cheap cruises” and “cruise deals”, which were aimed at targeting active buyers.
We looked at the SEO competition at the #1 spot for these two keywords, and deemed we could achieve the #1 ranking within 6 months through building quality and diverse links.
It was also clear the difference between ranking #1 -vs- #2. We are now getting more than twice as much traffic since we achieved the #1 ranking for “cheap cruises” when compared to the traffic we were getting when we were ranked #2!
That’s why when doing your keyword research, you should evaluate how feasible a #1 ranking is, as that’s where you can really dominate your competition. Using Google Adwords is also a quick way to test the market on whether those keywords will bring sufficient traffic, and how well it converts.

Before we came on board, Cruise Offers was getting around 100 hits per month.
